Lifting of Boil Water Notice Date:16th August, 2012.
On the advice of the Health Service Executive, Clonmel Borough Council issued a boil water notice for the Poulavanogue water supply on 14th August, 2012, servicing the Town Centre/Davis Road/Mountain Road area.
Clonmel Borough Council wishes to notify consumers, following advice from the Health Service Executive, that the Council is now in a position to remove the boil water notice with immediate effect.
The Clonmel Borough Council telephone no. (052)-9156160 will remain in operation until 20th August, 2012.
Clonmel Borough Council acknowledges the patience, cooperation and assistance of the general public during the period of the boil water notice and greatly regrets any inconvenience caused to householders and the business community.

Please note the temporary boil water notice issued on 14th Aug, 2012, below, will continue in place for another 24hours, as a further precautionary measure, pending the results of further analysis on additional water samples.
Areas Affected
- Town Centre/Davis Road area– Joyces Lane in the West to Dunnes Stores on the Davis Road in the East; Cuirt an Ri/King Street on the North side to the River Suir on the South side
- Mountain Road Area (This notice does not apply to other areas and water schemes in Clonmel)
It has come to the attention of Clonmel Borough Council that due to a combination of power failure and severe weather that the public water supply served by the Poulavanogue Water Supply may be contaminated. On the advice of the Health Service Executive and as a precautionary measure pending further investigation, atemporary boil water notice is being issued. Accordingly, in the interest of public health, it is recommended that all users on the Poulavanogue water scheme boil water before use.
- Water must be boiled for:
- Drinking
- Drinks made with water.
- Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating.
- Brushing of Teeth.
- Making of ice.
- Water can be used for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets but not for brushing teeth or gargling.
- Boil water by bringing to a vigorous, rolling boil and allow to cool. Cover and store in a refrigerator or cold place. Water from the hot tap is not safe to drink. Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink.
- Caution should be taken when bathing children to ensure that they do not swallow the bathing water.
- Discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers and filtered water in fridges. Make ice from cooled boiled water.
- Use water prepared for drinking when preparing foods that will not be cooked (e.g. washing salads )
- Prepare baby feeds with water that has been brought to the boil once and cooled. Do not use water that has been reboiled several times. Do not use bottled mineral water as some brands contain concentrations of minerals that are too high for babies.
- Anyone suffering from diarrhoea for more than two days should contact their general practitioner and provide a stool sample for testing. They should continue to drink plenty of boiled or bottled water.
Great care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.
How long before the boil water notice can be lifted?
We do not know at present, but Clonmel Borough Council will continue to liaise with the Health Service Executive with a view to lifting the Temporary Boil Water Notice as soon as practicable.
