PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY

Wednesday September 19th has been designated as Mouth Cancer Awareness Day here in Ireland.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit their local participating dentist or Cork University Dental School and Hospital for a FREE mouth cancer examination.

Over 300 cases of cancer of the mouth (oral cavity and pharynx) are detected in Ireland each year.  If detected early these cancers are easily treated.  A mouth cancer exam is painless and quick, takes only minutes and could save your life.

From Tuesday, 28 August 2012 to Saturday, 01 September 2012 at (South Tipperary County Museum, Clonmel)

South Tipperary County Council Arts Service presents Dig where you stand a project and exhibition curated by Eilís Lavelle, Sarah Lincoln and Rosie Lynch. The exhibition will be launched on Thursday 5th July at 6pm at South Tipperary County Council Museum.

The project has been driven by the optimistic premise that the visual arts can speak in strong and original ways to the local, and can strengthen a sense that inspiration does not have to reside elsewhere, but exists in latent form under one’s feet.

Dig where you stand exhibition, draws on aspects of the County Museum collection and presents the work of four national and international contemporary artists. The exhibition explores language and text in relation to the telling of the past and geographical location and responds directly to the context of a local museum setting and unfolds through video, sound, installation, artifacts from the County Museum collection, found objects, design and a publication.

Artists include:
Susan Hiller (UK)
Uriel Orlow (CH)
Bridget O’Gorman (IE)
Philippa Sutherland (IE)

Dig where you stand has developed from a curatorial residency, initiated by South Tipperary Arts Office, and based in South Tipperary throughout 2012. The project, which includes a series of reading events, exhibitions and a publication, has been collaboratively conceived by curators Eilís Lavelle, Rosie Lynch and the artist/writer Sarah Lincoln. Previous reading events have been hosted in various locations throughout the County, including Tipperary Excel, Worksmen’s Boat Club, Clonmel and the Bolton Library, Cashel. The reading events have included screenings and installations by various artists including Johanna Billing, Bridget O’Gorman, Jennie Moran and Uriel Orlow.

A publication edited by Sarah Lincoln and designed by Séan O’Sullivan will be launched to coincide with the exhibition. It includes texts by Sarah Lincoln, Eilís Lavelle, Rosie Lynch, Séan O’Sullivan and contributions by Philippa Sutherland and Bridget O’Gorman.

Exhibition open Tuesday – Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. Admission: Free

Today saw the start of a great four day festival in Clonmel, The Clonmel Busking Festival.  So many artists and groups have given their time to join in the festival which endevour’s to raise funds to aid the great work of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumblin.

There is no cover charge to venues but all donations will be gratefully received towards such a great cause.

Here is a full list of the events and more information is available on the official website: http://www.clonmelbuskingfestival.ie/

This Wednesday, the 1st August is the first Wednesday of the month and access to all OPW heritage sites around the country will be free on that day.  This is a part of an initiative launched in July 2011 in order to stimulate an interest in our built heritage and to encourage visits by a wider section of all communities living in Ireland, in addition to visitors from abroad.  The free access programme will continue on the first Wednesday of every month between now and the end of this year”.

I would encourage as many people as are able to visit any of our sites to avail of this opportunity to see and experience the wonderful presentation of our national heritage at a location near them.

Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Normal conditions of admission apply.

Visitors may experience delays at some of our busier sites and are advised to arrive early.

If allocated a time, visitors are asked to arrive promptly for the start of their tour. There is no guarantee that visitors who miss their allocated tour-slot can be accommodated at a later time.  Children must be supervised at all times.

Access to some sites is by guided tour only. In the case of Newgrange and Knowth, there is no direct access to these monuments – admission is solely via the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre.

Car-parking may be limited at some sites and patrons are requested to respect the facilities and other car park users.
Please Note that the following sites are not managed by the OPW and normal arrangements apply: Muckross House & Gardens, and Muckross Traditional Farms; Glenveagh Castle.

N.B. Only those sites with an asterisk are open all year round. All other sites listed have a shorter season or restricted opening in winter, and Free Admission will not apply outside the opening arrangements listed on http://www.heritageireland.ie for each site.
Opening times can change at short notice. Visitors are requested to check the website for updates prior to their visit.

Full details of all OPW managed heritage sites where guide services are provided can be found at www.heritageireland.ie“.
