In support of European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (ECCPW) which takes place from 24 to 30 January, CervicalCheck is partnering with the IFPA to remind women aged 25 to 60 how important it is to have a regular smear test.
Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, yet worldwide cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under the age of 44.
In Ireland, approximately 300 women are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year and over 90 women die from the disease.
Regular screening by smear test is the most effective way to prevent cervical cancer. Through CervicalCheck, women aged 25 to 60 can avail of free regular smear tests from a registered GP, practice nurse, family planning or women’s health clinic of their choice.
The Pearl of Wisdom campaign encourages women to check when their next free smear test is due, or avail of their first test if they have not yet done so. This can be done on http://www.cervicalcheck.ie or by calling CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
The Pearl of Wisdom is the European symbol of ECCPW and during the week, women are encouraged to wear or share a pearl to show their solidarity with those affected by cervical cancer and to highlight the importance of cervical screening.
Women who call CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55 will be sent a free Pearl of Wisdom to wear or share and are encouraged to post a selfie with the pearl on Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #sharethewisdom
